Ladies and gentlemen, today is my honor to present you a man, who contributed to the shape of our nation. A man who had a rough infancy, through struggle, fought for the civil rights at the time of oppression cause by the segregation, inequalities and injustice, a man who never gave up for freedom. A man through his dedication, perseverance was able to make a difference in the African American community. Today he is recognized worldwide, and celebrated in the black history month. This man is Malcolm X. Malcolm X was a visionary who had the courage to step up and motivate the African Americans to fight for their freedom, through his speeches he enable African American to act to have the equalities and justice for all. Today, his acts†¦show more content†¦One of his changes was due to the influence of John Elton Bembry a self-educated himself. One day Bembry told Malcolm X that he â€Å"had some brains†, and consequently he begin to self educate himself (1). By using the prison library and the study of the dictionary he began his self-education program. The second phase of his prison time â€Å"homemade education† was debating other prisoners and clergy on the topic of history, politics and philosophy by his extensive reading. He continued to hone his oratorical skill which later in life would benefit him the most. In addition, he improved his writing skill by corresponding with his sister Hilda and later on with the nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammed (2). After transfer to Norfolk prison in Massachusetts in 1947, Malcolm converted to the religion of Islam. He stopped drinking and smoking, and he preached the teaching of Elijah muhamed to other prisoners. After the release from prison in 1952, he began preaching the NOI message on the street corner. Malcolm was assigned minister in the NOI by Elijah Muhammad and assigned his own mosque in Detroit, which he built into the largest in the nation. 3 His effectiveness as a preacher made him the spokesperson for NOI which membership in the organization grew from 400 to 10,000 people. This is what is so great about this country, you ca n do that. Realize though, that same law that gives you the right to speak your mind, also give others the right to not listen. Please, the same law that protects you also protects everyone else. While you have the right to speak your mind, most will agree your rights stop at interfering with others’ rights. Christian conservatives, you are so intent on having our way, but the more you push your views upon everyone the more you push them away! Remember Mr.. James, the Baptist student ministers’ statement about forcing the Bible down someone’s throat is no way to gather a flock. Yes, convey your ideals, but you cannot educate someone if they do not want to listen. And, offending them is a good way to close their ears and minds. In the argument about everyone’s rights there was a compromise offered of a â€Å"civil union†. This gave same sex couples some of the rights they were looking for, becoming a family making health insurance extendable to the partner, child custody between partners, survivorship of property in the event of one partner’s death. This was not upheld at the federal level, only a handful of states accommodated. Somehow this was not enough; you had to have â€Å"marriage† and not a â€Å"civil union†. (GLAD) Same but separate somehow. It is not so much the word as it is the idea. I was hung up on why â€Å"marriage† was so important; the civil unions were on the right track. But if you were to say to me that Which was not a real religion, I would very likely go off on the discrimination of conservatives. Like many things, though, it takes time. Even though one law wiped out slavery, the civil rights movement took a long time, and it came in stages. Even when other regress was made, interracial marriages still had to be overcome. Get the civil unions, push to get it to the federal level, get more equal footing, then when it is almost the same, push to call it marriage. I think you have to work on people a few at a time. Pushing against that many people all at once isn’t going to get you far. Logically, why should same sex marriages be outlawed? How many religions are out there, and how many claim to be the one true way to God? There are a few that don’t recognize only one god, then there are the atheists who believe there is no god. If we re not going to dictate a religion, we cannot endorse any religions views on marriage. If our laws state that government and religion must be separate, why then, are we even debating the notions that the marriage defined in the bible is the only acceptable definition, when marriage is a legal institution? Unfortunately humans are an emotional creature. Some people so believe there is going to be hell to pay for homosexuality, those people have that right. Others believe that first group is out of their minds, they are within their rights. People are beginning to realize the ideals of he past don’t hold up to intellectual scrutiny. Some, well many, people are trying to hold on to a tradition, one that they have believed in since they can remember. Every step we move away from that as a society, chips away at the foundations of their beliefs. Change is hard for some; they may have to accept the changes reluctantly. The demographic of society has changed dramatically over the last 20 years and with that law enforcement has been changing, but have they been changing enough? Different law enforcement agencies have their own ways of implementing diversity in their practices and procedures, some of them are better than others, but with issues that happen today it is important that they do something. There have been major incidents in our generation that have caused the need for diversity reform in law enforcement. The biggest incident was the attacks on the United States of America that occurred on September 11th, 2001. The attacks that occurred on this day caused great hate for the Middle Eastern culture. Ever since Lincoln freed the slaves with the emancipation proclamation there has been great hate towards this culture. There were groups formed, such as the Ku Klux Klan that’s soul purpose was to get rid of African Americans. Following this African-Americans were always treated as unequal to the white male. They were segregated and found it utterly impossible to gain any ground in society. How could they? African Americans rarely got the opportunity to get an education or have a good job. Hate crimes have continued to be a very real issue for African Americans. There are some law enforcement agencies that are taking a proactive approach by implementing diversity training programs for their employees as well as the citizens in their communities The Bakersfield Police Department is a good example of this. According to an interview on usmayors. org, Bakersfield is one of the most diverse cities in the state of California. The Police Department there does what they think is necessary in order to train their officers on how to deal with the variety of cultures in the city. The Bakersfield Police Department also presents cultural awareness training during in-house advanced officer schools. This training is not sensitivity training nor is it designed to get the officer to adopt the characteristics of other cultures, rather it helps the officer gain an understanding of the differences between cultures. † (usmayors. org) It is programs like this that are going to make a huge difference in the hate crimes we see today. If we have officers that know the cultures and can police accordingly, they can make a difference in someone’s life. Not every department is as lucky as Bakersfield PD. There are places that may have poor practices, and care very little about diversity. It wont make a difference if we leave it up to the local government to develop diversity practices and procedures, because it would most likely get put on the back burner. This is something that needs to be mandated at a state level. If we implement statewide diversity practices and procedures that are enforced at the local level I believe that we would see a great change in our communities. We are all the human race, and I think it is sad when people forget that. Diversity should not be a controversial issue in society. I think with equality and cultural awareness being taught in our schools today we will soon see the end to â€Å"the minority† and focus more on the fact that we are all human.

When a tumor is developed on the brain, it is called a brain tumor or brain cancer. Brain tumors can be benign or malignant (benign being not cancerous and malignant being cancerous). Both types can be deadly when dealing with the brain. Benign brain tumors consist of very slow growing cells. They have distinct borders and rarely spread to other locations. When viewed under a microscope, the cells of a benign tumor have an almost normal appearance. Even though these tumors sound harmless they can be life-threatening when located in such a vital area. Since the skull is unable to expand when the tumor grows it puts pressure on the brain. This results in damaged brain tissues and if left untreated a person could die. A malignant tumor is a tumor that could potentially invade and destroy important tissues and cells. They can also spread to other parts of the body (metastasize). Brain tumors can initially start in the brain. They can also spread to other parts of the body from the brain but this rarely happens. Some tumors may be worse than others. Tumor staging is used to determine the extent of cancer. The stage indicates if the cancer has spread and how far. The stages are listed below: T = Primary tumor size/extent T0: Primary tumor not present T1, T2, T3, T4 The higher the number, the larger the size/extent of the tumor. The most common and often first symptoms of brain tumors are headaches and seizures. Later symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, change in pulse, and trouble breathing. Mental changes may also occur such as difficulty in communication and speech. In general symptoms greatly depend on the location of the tumor. For example if the tumor is on the occipital lobe, you would have problems with your vision. One positive aspect of this procedure is that it limits the amount of radiation that the entire brain receives so less normal brain cells are destroyed. Unlike most benign tumors when located on the brain they can cause death. Because of their location brain, tumors are difficult to treat. Brain cancer research is underfunded. Images of people seeking for refuge, images of peop le trying to escape their danger from the Serbian forces, images of people wounded, and the images of people killed have captured and covered not only the Bosnian genocide but can also elicit sentiments of sorrow, grief and fear from the testimonies of the survivors of the said war. The Bosnian war had all begun when the Bosnian Serbs attacked the lands where the Bosnian Muslims were residing. They attacked such zones in order to secure the Serb’s territory. This was followed by â€Å"ethnic cleansing†. The Serbian forces systematically eliminated the Muslim population within their territory. They separated the men from the women and children. Some of them were forced to escape the zones which the Serbs had considered to own. Nonetheless, this also resulted to thousands of deaths among the Bosnian Muslims. In addition to that, the series of constant attacks made by the Serbian army had likewise resulted to thousands of killings. Meanwhile, the United Nation declared th at Srebrenica was a safe area in 1993. Introduction The current financial crisis has in the space of one year radically changed the global business environment. Resulting in failures and bankruptcies of international banks and financial institutions, sharp increases in mortgage failures and home repossessions, drastically reduced availability of credit, termination of thousands of job, and increasing unemployment, the crisis is expected to impact the market for cars, Hadika plc’s main product, significantly. Demand for cars is already showing signs of reducing, leading to their stockpiling at factories, dealers, and ports. Whilst sales of cheaper cars, which form Hadika’s major product range, have not until now experienced worrying drops, future prospects remain uncertain and the market is expected to become far more competitive. Financial accounting is primarily a recording method that aims to present a true and fair picture of (a) the revenues, expenses and profits of businesses during specific determined periods, and (b) the value of their assets and liabilities on a specific date, for all users of prepared financial statements. This aim of financial accounting to provide a true and fair picture of the operations and the assets of businesses has resulted in the development of a vast and intricate system of accounting that has been shaped by influences from accountants, auditors, taxation authorities, regulatory bodies, stock exchanges, company managements, and other stakeholders.[2] Whilst financial accounting has evolved in different directions in different regions and countries, globalisation is leading to the convergence of these different methods and to the gradual evolution of a single standardised global financial accounting system.[3] MA, like financial accounting, helps in providing a picture of the company’s operations. Its basic approach is however very different and it serves more as an internal accounting tool that helps managements to improve their costs and cost structures, productivity, operational efficiency, sales performance, and profitability.[4] Based upon the same time tested accounting methods as financial accounting, MA uses more of cost accounting techniques and has essentially evolved and enlarged from the cost accounting methods that were pioneered by John Wedgwood during the great recession.[5] The use of MA as an internal management tool allows for great flexibility in its usage and scope and encourages its shaping and modification by the needs of operating processes, businesses, and organisations.[6] MA uses accepted costing methods like batch, process, standard and activity based costing. It helps managements to determine unit costs, variable costs, fixed costs, and breakeven points. Processes like marginal costing, Make or Buy and Cost Volume Profit (CVP) analyses help in determination of product profitability and optimisation of sales mix; budgeting techniques aid in optimising operational performance and cash flows through comparison of actual performance against budgets and analysing positive and negative variances.[7] The company currently determines unit costs by absorbing all costs incurred by the company into individual products and dividing such costs by simple parameters like production or sales numbers.[8] Such a system, whilst in use in many firms, is likely to lead to erroneous costing build-ups, misleading information and inappropriate pricing decisions.[9] Classification of Hadika’s costs into Variable Costs, (those that are dependent upon production volume; like material and direct labour), and Fixed Costs, (those that are incurred irrespective of production volume; like salaries, rents and depreciation), will enable the organisation to ascertain breakeven points at different sales prices and sales volumes and make appropriate pricing decisions, which in turn will help in achieving competitive advantage, market penetration, and profit optimisation.[10] CVP analyses will allow the firm to determine the effect of various cost, price and volume combinations upon organisational profitability and assist significantly in taking decisions regarding determination of sales mix, introduction of new products and phasing out of unprofitable products or product lines.[11] Sensitivity analyses and cost and volume simulations will help Hadika in forecasting the impact of changes in costs and volumes upon profitability.[12] Management accountants are expected to compile records, statements, and forecasts, on the basis of historical and projected figures for sales, costs and other expenses, with the use of current cost and management accounting techniques.[13] Their job, whilst being grounded in basic accounting and cost accounting concepts, is essentially interdisciplinary and interdepartmental, needing them to investigate the nature of different costs and revenues and analyse them in a user friendly manner for the use of management, as well as for the sales, and production departments.[14] Whilst management accountants make use of normal computing aids like Excel spreadsheets for their computation and analysis, the development of sophisticated ERP software has empowered them significantly and they are now able to provide far more complex analyses of the impact of developments in various business areas upon organisational productivity, cost efficiency and profitability. 3. Application of Management Accounting Methods at Hadika With the current financial crisis reducing credit availability, employment, and incomes, across the advanced nations, the market for cars is likely to be affected drastically in the coming months; buyers are expected to increasingly look for products that are cheap, economical to run, and provide value for money. The crisis is expected to be particularly hard on people in higher income groups, consequent to their wealth evaporating in the face of stock market meltdowns. Such initiatives will also help the management in investigating and analysing â€Å"make or buy† options, and if possible in outsourcing the production of some components from more economical sources; thus driving down the company’s cost of production. Outsourcing of components from more economical producers will in turn lead to the identification of surplus employees, who can then either be deployed effectively in other activities, or let go, both options leading to cost savings and improvements in efficiency. The segregation of costs into fixed and variable will also bring all fixed costs into focus and provide numerous other opportunities for cost savings through the identification of (a) unutilised or underutilised workforce, rent, or machinery, and (b) excessive costs in administration, travel, entertainment, external consultants, electricity, canteen expenses and legal fees, thus opening up numerous areas in which costs could progressively be reduced without upsetting the working of the company or employee morale. Comparison of sales forecasts with actual achievements, accompanied by analysis of variances and study of product contribution, could help the company in focussing on poorly performing products, followed by identification of reasons for poor performance, and the possibilities and consequences of introducing price or even, (if the situation so warrants), production cuts. CVP analysis will allow managers to gain instant access to the results of numerous permutations of sales mix, in terms of individual and composite break even points and profitability, thus allowing them to target on the optimum sales mix, both from the point of view of the market and of the firm. Application of MA techniques will help the company to (a) control and reduce costs (b) focus on profitable and unprofitable segments by way of contribution analysis, (c) decide upon price reductions and (d) strategically pass on cost advantages to the customer or dealer to increase competitive advantage and market share. Analysis and simulation of Cash Flows, another integral component of MA, will help the management to understand the effect of these changes on the cash flows of the company and enable timely corrective action. 4. Ken Kesey and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with its meaningful message of individualism, was an extremely influential novel during the 1960's. In addition, its author, Ken Kesey, played a significant role in the development of the counterculture of the 60's; this included all people who did not conform to society's standards, experimented in drugs, and just lived their lives in an unconventional manner. Ken Kesey had many significant experiences that enabled him to create One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. As a result of his entrance into the creative writing program at Stanford University in 1959 (Ken 1), Kesey moved to Perry Lane in Menlo Park. It was there that he and other writers first experimented with psychedelic drugs. After living at Perry Lane for a while, Kesey's friend, Vik Lovell, informed him about experiments at a local V.A. hospital in which volunteers were paid to take mind-altering drugs (Wolfe 321). Kesey's experiences at the hospital were his first step towards writing Cuckoo's Nest. Upon testing the effects of the then little-known drug, LSD, "...he was in a realm of consciousness he had never dreamed of before and it was not a dream or delirium but part of his awareness (322)." This awareness caused him to believe that these psychedelic drugs could enable him to see things the way they were truly meant to be seen. After working as a test subject for the hospital, Kesey was able to get a job working as a psychiatric aide. This was the next significant factor in writing the book. "Sometimes he would go to work high on acid (LSD) (323)." By doing so, he was able to understand the pain felt by the patients on the ward. In addition, the job allowed him to examine everything that went on within the confines of the hospital. From these things, Kesey obtained exceptional insight for writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. To make the novel seem as realistic as possible, he loosely based the characters on the personalities of people in the ward; also, his use of drugs while writing allowed him to make scenes such as Chief Bromden's (The Chief is the narrator of the story.

You have from people learning on-line while other attends a class room environment. Some people are hands on learners while others can read an assignment and retain the information very well. When I first started this exercise I thought to myself how I learn the material I am trying to obtain. After taking all four of the surveys and completing the exercises I found it very interesting the breakdown of my learner abilities.In all the styles and ways of learning I found that I am a visual learner. As a visual learner I prefer hands on training, taking lots of notes, and visual seeing the big picture and then breaking down the picture while trying to understand how it all comes together. But being a visual learner doesn’t really stop here. I decided to go further into detail to see what a visual learner means to me. I have decided to seek a college degree to prepare myself for the future and prepare myself for the new chapter in life. I only have about two years remaining in the military and a few courses left to complete my bachelor degree.My supervisor a few weeks ago sat down with me really broke it down for me and helps me understand time management and finding time to finish my degree. She pretty much gave me a more time so I can finish my education. A challenge I am willing to accept. Despite me working full time and many long hours I decided to attend on-line classes. Considering surveys taken; on-line courses is one of my weaknesses since how I prefer eyes on and hands on training but through the proper motivation and dedication I can overcome my weakness and make it my strength. Stench of Kerosene was about a young Sikh married woman, called Guleri, who could not bear children and how society viewed and dealt with her due to this. It is a story of how she is seen as an outcast to the family so much so that the mother then brings a new wife into the household; to try to replace the old one; this then leads Guleri to suicide. The other texts studied were a short story in epistolary form called The Three Sisters and a novel called Pride and Prejudice. This was known as a dowry. Men also married a second wife to produce an heir if their first wife was unable as it was the case in Stench of Kerosene. The story hints that the main reason behind Guleri committing suicide and the mother wanting Manak to have a second wife was that Guleri could not have children. Manaks mother role in society then was to bring up her children well and then to find a good daughter in law who could have children and carry on the family name. She was very narrow-minded and did what society expected of her. She felt that her decision for bringing a new wife into the family was justified, as that was what society expected her to do. She had fulfilled her role and the expectation that society had put upon her and now she wanted a daughter in law who would do the same. The mother was brought up and guided by the expectations of society and she felt that if she had gone against what society had expected of her then she would have ultimately become an outcast as society would have seen it as her not fulfilling her role as a mother. Guleri on the other hand, did not see it as Manaks mother fulfilling her role, but saw her interference as a punishment for not being able to fulfil expectations put on her by society. In the Sikh religion babies are of great importance and their birth is rejoiced by the family. The birth of a baby is seen as strengthening the stability of the marriage and ensuring the continuance of the family line. If a woman in the Sikh religion is unable to have children then she is unable to inherit land or money from her husband when he dies. They are seen as outcasts as they are not able to produce an heir. This meant that bearing children was an essential role of a Sikh woman and Guleri was unable to fulfil the role she was expected to and as a result Guleri was made to feel like a complete outcast by society. A wife in the Sikh religion has two main roles they are to have children and to look after her family. Guleri could not fulfil all of her duties and was disregarded and seen as an outcast by her family and society, she was seen as damaged. The new wife probably made Guleri feel as though she was damaged goods and so she was replaced by a new and working model. When Guleri heard of the second wife she felt let down by her husband and like he had abandoned her because she could not have a child. She felt as though she was indebted to suffer for her inadequacies. She felt lonely and unloved as if she was impure and saw the only way out as death. The symbolism behind Guleris death highlights the violence of it compared to the Sikh idea of death as being like sleep. The way that Guleri chose to kill herself created a dramatic and shocking effect and was seen as primal and more painful. It symbolised how much pain emotionally that Guleri was in. When Manak heard what had happened to Guleri he was mute with pain. Manak could be seen as a coward and a fool for not being stronger and for not standing up to his mother when she told him about getting a new wife, but it can be seen as not all being Manaks fault as he was brought up traditionally. He new his role as a man and a husband that was to be a loyal husband and to find a wife who would produce an heir to the family. He was taught to respect and obey his parents. Manak wanted to retort, you are a woman; why dont you cry like one for a change! But he remained silent. However if Manak had gone against what his mother wanted then he too would have become an outcast to society for going against his elders and not fulfilling his role as a man. The new wife however was probably made to feel like an outcast by Manak, as he knew that no one could ever replace Guleri. But by his mother the new wife fit in with the family, as she got pregnant quickly. The mother said at one point that she had spent five hundred rupees on the new wife, and this was probably a lot of money in those days, which suggests that some women married for money. This is similar in Pride and Prejudice as charlotte Lucas married Mr Collins because of his money. And also in The Three Sisters, Mary chooses to marry Mr Watts because he is a very wealthy man. This shows that the societies these stories are in are completely materialistic. Prtiam shows that the roles of women are completely dominated by men and society. It would be correct to say that if societys beliefs had not been so enforced upon women then Manak and Guleris marriage would have survived. I believe this as Sikh women have only three main concerns in life and they are to get married and have children, to look their families well and to get their children married off to good and wealthy families. This circle would therefore be enforced on many more generations to come and the main reason being is to have children. Stench of Kerosene had political reasons for it being published. Pritam saw that society needed to be changed and this story showed why and how women felt about was a stereotypical role of a Sikh woman was. The tone in which Pritam wrote this story was very serious and is not humorous at all, unlike Pride and Prejudice. She made it a serious story as Pritam felt very strongly about how women were portrayed and how they were rejected by society if they were unable to perform the roles that were expected of them. She wrote the story as a narrative and because of this we can see how Pritam feels about certain the roles of women. She uses objects to symbolise the characters emotions. She used the flute to tell us how Manak felt about Guleri leaving. Then putting the flute to his lips, blew a strange anguished wail. He expresses how he feels through the way he plays his flute, as he is unable to say it in words. Pritam gives us a more visual and better understanding of the point that she wants to put across, by using emotive language, for example: Manak, mute with pain, could only stare and feel his own life burning out. It gives us a more realistic feeling of the story and allows us to see just how devastated Manak is. We can tell that he is completely destroyed and will never get over what Guleri did. This is put across more clearly at the end when Manaks child is born and when he holds him for the first time, he is not the happy and joyous father that one would expect but instead he, he shrieked hysterically, Take him away! He stinks of kerosene. His reaction to his new child seems as though he feel guilty and somewhat responsible about what happened to Guleri. We can tell that what to Guleri did not only affect Manak but also the whole family, as the new wife will never be loved by Manak and nor will the new child as he will always be a constant reminder to Manak of something that he could never have with Guleri and the reason for her death. He will also always be very resentful towards his mother as she took away the one person he loved in the whole world with no thought to the consequences, and most of all Manak will probably never be able to forgive himself. There was a lot of pressure on women in those days to have children if they did not have children the women would be rejected by society and most just wanted to fit in. If Guleri had tolerated Manak having a second wife and gone back to live with the family despite this she would probably have been rejected. The Three Sisters was not published until quite awhile after it was written, in 1792. This story was set in London. The Three Sisters show that marriage was one of the only concerns of women in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Jane Austens time marriage was more or less then only way out of the parental house. There was no real way for women to be on their own or to have independence in those days. There were no professional jobs open to women and the few that there were, such as being a governess, were not very highly regarded, and either did not pay well or had very poor working conditions. Pride and Prejudice and the Three Sisters show this well as both Mrs Bennet, the mother in Pride and Prejudice, and Mrs Stanhope, the mother in The Three Sisters, main concern was to get all their children married. how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them. For I am determined not to let such an opportunity escape of settling one of my Daughters do advantageously. In The Three Sisters the arrangement of marriage is portrayed like prostitution, in that the way Mrs Stanhope is haggling over the price for Mary, and tries to get as much pin money for Mary from Mr Watts as she can. Remember the pin money: two hundred a year. A hundred and seventy five madam. Two hundred indeed, Sir. Said my mother. Mrs Stanhope also seems as though she is pimping her other daughter in case Mr Watt does not like or want Mary. In The Three Sisters the only factor Mrs Stanhope takes into account and uses to form her opinion of Mr Watts is how wealthy he is. In this way Mrs Stanhope and Mrs Bennet are very similar as she too forms an opinion by how wealthy a man is. A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls! She is determined to have Mr Watts as part of her family as he was a good man to know. In Mrs Stanhopes opinion the reason that Mr Watts wanted to marry Mary was because he wishes to be allied to the family and the way for a man to become allied with a family was to marry one of the daughters. This applied very much in Mr Watts case he did not care which daughter he married. Mrs Stanhope also wanted to be allied to Mr Watts as he had a higher status in society than she did and if one of her daughters married him then their familys status would also go higher. This is a similar situation to Pride and Prejudice as Mrs Bennet wanted Mr Collins to be allied with the family as he was quite a wealthy man and when Mr Collins proposed to Elizabeth Mrs Bennet put a lot of pressure on her to say yes by telling Elizabeth: Yes, or I will never see her again. Mrs Stanhopes main role as a mother and in story was to have children, make sure they are taken care of well, look after their husbands and run the home. Mrs Stanhope has a lot of power in this story as she is the one who decides which daughter shall get married and to whom. She could force one of her daughters to get married and they could not say no as it would be disrespectful to their mother. She exercises her power over her daughters when Mary is still trying to make up her mind over marry Mr Watts, by telling Mary that if she does not marry Mr Watts then Georgiana must. Mary is shown as I very materialistic and indecisive young girl. She marries Mr Watts because he is a very wealthy man. In letter one Mary tells us that she says Mr Watts is: He is extremely disagreeable and I hate him more than any body else in the world. Mary chooses to marry Mr Watts as sees it as a way of getting a higher status in society than the rest of her family. Which shows that she is similar to Lydia in Pride and Prejudice, as it seems as though she only married Mr Wickham to get a higher status than her family. Mrs Stanhope could easily push Mary into marring Mr Watts as Mary had made it very clear that she had wanted to get married before any of her sisters. I could not bear to have either of them married before me. Marys main role in society is to look after her husband and to have children to carry on the family. This is very similar to the society and the expectation of women in Stench of Kerosene. It is very clear that Mary has a one-track mind in that she is very unidealistic and feels as though Mr Watts should be grateful that she has accepted his proposal. She does not believe in marrying for love and thinks that if one of the couple loves the other then there is no need for the other to love them back. when there is so much love on one side, there is no occasion for it on the other. The Three Sisters is serious, formal and shows a harsher portrayal of women. However it is quite humorous in places compared to Stench of Kerosene. It was written when Austen was only a teenager when she wrote it and she was probably entering the marriage market herself. The characters in the story were probably someone that Austen could relate to as she herself was a teenager and was having similar problems as her characters were. Austen could relate to her characters and she often hid her views and thoughts behind her characters humour and fictional style writing. The story was quite controversial as it told us what women were like and how they really felt about issues then, but society was not interested about these things. Society looked down on anyone that was seen to speak up for women and were thought of and seen as abnormal, and their name and reputation was often destroyed. Austen wrote the story in a letter form as it allows us to see the reaction of characters better as it is they who are describing how they feel and what they think. It also allows us to get to know the characters better however not as well as in Pride and Prejudice. The main difference between these two stories is that Pride and Prejudice focuss more the reasons for getting married and the consequences of actions that women took. `Pride and Prejudice was written in 1813 and was set in Longbourne in Hertfordshire. Mrs Bennet is a stereotypical middle class woman in those days. She is materialistic, over dramatic and a gossip. These characteristics are portrayed in an exaggerated way. When we first meet Mrs Bennet we can see that she is a gossip. My dear, you must know, Mrs long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from north of England; Mrs Bennet appears to be a similar character to Mrs Stanhope, all she wants is for all her daughters to be married and taken care of. Her main role is to take care of her family and make she that her children get married. In Pride and Prejudice the men hold most of the power and this is shown many occasions in the Bennet household by Mr Bennet. An unhappy alterative is before you, Elizabeth. From this you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr Collins, and I will never see you again if you do. It is clear that Mr Bennet did not marry Mrs Bennet for love. We can assume that Mr Bennet probably only proposed to Mrs Bennet because as a young lady she was very pretty and that he probably never knew what she was like. He puts up with by not taking her seriously. Because of the way that Mr Bennet treats his wife their children have grown up not taking their mother seriously and not having much respect for her. This shows most of all in Elizabeth by the way she acts around her mother. Elizabeth is strong minded and a very opinionative young lady. She is also her fathers favourite daughter and often gives him advice, which he rarely takes. Elizabeth does not believe in getting married for love and does not think she would get married. Lydia on the other hand was exactly like her mother. She was emotional, immature, she does not think but acts on impulses, which nearly brings her to ruins. Lydia would cross all the boundaries and broke all the codes that society had set for women, this was shown when Lydia runs off with Mr Wickham and she does not think of the affect it would have on her family or the distress it may cause them. As it was not expectable behaviour to run off and elope. Society looked down on it and it suggested that she had bad upbringing as she was disrespecting her parents by eloping. However in those days it was very important for a woman to get married, as that is what society expected of them. Unmarried women were a great burden to their families as they would have to live with their families or with family approved protectors, as it was unheard of for an unmarried woman to live by herself. Jane Austen, herself was a dependant as she was unmarried and was forced to live with relatives. Mary in Pride and Prejudice knew she would not get married as she was not as pretty as her other sisters so she concentrated on music and learning. Marriage to women then was not all about getting away from their parents but was one of the only ways in which women could gain financial security. By marring, women were entitled to an allotment of money each year, called pin money. This money was to be spent as she wished but not for household necessities. However an unmarried woman would and could only inherit money form her family if she had no brothers as they lived on a patriarchy society, in which men hold the power and women were largely excluded from. In Pride and Prejudice and The Three Sisters, they both seem to be set in a patriarchy society as the men hold the power in both the stories. However in Stench of Kerosene the mother holds the most power in the story, which is unusual. The women that Austen wrote about were showed as foolish, materialistic, gossips and were only concerned about how other familys saw them and who the would get married to. These characteristics are different to the way that Pritam portrays women in her story she shows them as innocent, loving, obedient, and respectful to their family and husband, as Guleri shows when she fell in love with Manak. Pride and Prejudice was more humorous than The Three Sisters was, it took a more satirical approach rather than political one to get its points across. Austen blamed the traditions of society through the humour of her characters. All three stories allow us to see that the roles of women have been the same over the centuries and that they are not changing very much in a hurry. They allow us to that men have always held a very powerful role in the home and the way in which a woman is brought is depending on how society expects them to act. Society have always judged women and enforced their rules and boundaries upon them. If those rules are broken they are looked down upon and would be ultimately be outcast them.
