Operations Management Introduction Operations management is the activity of managing the resources that create and deliver services and products. The operations function is the part of the organization that is responsible for this activity. Every organization has an operations function because every organization creates some type of services and/or products. However, not all types of organization will necessarily call the operations function by this name. Operations managers are the people who have particular responsibility for managing some, or all, of the resources which comprise the operations function. Again in some organizations, the operations managers could be called by some other name. However, there are many ways of judging performance and there are many different individuals and groups doing the judging. So in this chapter we start by describing a very broad ap proach to measuring operations performance that use the ‘triple bottom line’ to judge an operation’s social, environmental and economic impact. Then look at the more directly operations-related aspects of performance – quality, speed, dependability, flexibility and cost. One common term that tries to capture the idea of broader approach to assessing an organisation’s performance is the ‘triple bottom line’ (TBL, or 3BL), also known as’ people, planet and profit’. Essentially, it is a straightforward idea – simply that organizations should measure themselves not just on the economic profit that they generate for their owners, but also on the impact their operations have on society (broadly, in the sense of communities, and individually, for example in teams of their employees) and the environment. The influential initiative that has come out of this triple bottom ling approach is that of ‘sustainability’ . A sustainable business it one that creates an acceptable profit for its owners, but minimizes the damage to the environment and enhances the existence of the people with whom it has contact.
